Film: Unnatural Causes

Unnatural Causes…is inequality making us sick.

UNNATURAL CAUSES is the acclaimed documentary series broadcast by PBS and now used by thousands of organizations around the country to tackle the root causes of our alarming socio-economic and racial inequities in health.

The four-hour series crisscrosses the nation uncovering startling new findings that suggest there is much more to our health than bad habits, health care, or unlucky genes. The social circumstances in which we are born, live, and work can actually get under our skin and disrupt our physiology as much as germs and viruses.

Pointed Dispute: Fresno Doctor Backs Needle Exchange Without Joining Trade. From The Fresno Bee

“The Fresno Free Medical Clinic started about 12 years ago, and I volunteered there for a year and a half. The clinic caters mostly to an IV drug user population, but we also saw poor and homeless individuals, and prostitutes; all are either uninsured or covered by medi-cal or medicaid programs. The clinic is run out of a school bus, it’s cramped at times and supplies are limited, but we do our best. The clinic works alongside several other groups and individuals who are trying to help this population of people, including the Fresno Free Needle Exchange, volunteers from various drug treatment centers, and a social worker who helps people find housing, food, jobs, treatment centers, domestic abuse shelters, and mental health centers.”
