DCOM Intramural Soccer 2012

Location: LMU soccer practice field at the bottom of DCOM hill.

Time:  Season will tentatively start March 28th and run through the end of April or early May.

Team

∙       All DCOM health science students along with their spouses/significant others are invited to participate. LMU undergrads are also welcomed, however 3/5 players on the field at all times need to be DCOM health science students. (This rule is implemented to encourage integration of spouses/significant others and LMU undergrads and discourage segregation. It is hoped that with more integration and less segregation there will be less on the field conflicts and a big happy LMU-DCOM intramural family.)

∙       Each captain is responsible to turn in a signed completed waiver form for each spouse/significant other participating

∙       5 players on the field at a time.

∙       Substitutions can be made in live play but only at the half line. If the player substitutes at a point other than the half line and gives his or her team the advantage, then the player will be given a two minute penalty and the team will play down a man until the other team scores or the two minutes has elapsed.

∙       Players can only participate for one team for the entire duration of the season. If a player is found to have played on two teams at any point in the season, that player and the second team that player participates with is disqualified.

∙       Qualifying for tournament – a player must participate in at least one regular season game in order to participate in the end of the year tournament.

CAPTAIN

Each team will need one captain or two co-captains.

  • Captains will be responsible for:
  1. Submitting the roster, spouse waiver forms, team name, and team color.
  2. Contacting other team’s captain(s’) and assigned referees if re-scheduling is needed.
  3. Resolving concerns during games regarding his/her team member(s’) sportsmanship—if members of the other team are not acting appropriately, please inform the current referees and contact the IM coordinator.
  4. Ensuring that a soccer ball will be present—contacting the other team may be necessary if you can’t find one in your team.
  5. 5.    Refereeing games—one captain will be needed to referee each game in which they will not be playing (asking a member of your team to substitute for you is allowed).
  • The idea will be as follows: Each team will be playing back to back games; therefore, captains will either show up one hour early to referee the games preceding their own or will stay after their game for one hour to referee the following two games. Get it done as quickly as possible. You can rotate through your team members so you don’t get stuck refereeing each week if you like. Please make sure your substitute understands soccer rules.

Time Management

∙       Games will consist of two 20-minute halves with a 5 minute intermission. Games will start on time, so be there before scheduled time (referees too).

∙       No time outs.

∙       Clock stops for any free kick in the last minute of play.

Gameplay

∙       Field is divided into two halves, scoring can only occur on the goal side of the field (shots made across the half line that do not touch a player are not counted).

∙       Goal kicks are anywhere along the touch line up to the top of the crease.  Opposing players must be given 6 yards. If a goal kick crosses mid field without touching another player possession will be awarded to the other team.

∙       There are no throw-ins. The ball is played as an indirect free kick from where it went out unless it goes over the touch line resulting in a goal kick or a corner kick.

∙       In the case of a free kick, the opposing team must give four yards space (not ten) unless it is a goal kick (six yards). Direct kicks will be awarded for viscous fouls and hand balls determined by the referee. All other infractions will be indirect free kicks (minor infractions).

  • When a free kick is awarded and the spot of the kick is so close to the crease (within 4 yards) that no person may stand between the kicker and not be in the crease, the kicker will have an open shot from the half line to the goal. The kicker may also choose to simply put the ball in play to one of his/her teammates at this time—this pass must travel behind the half line. The kicker is to be chosen by the kicking team. This is to discourage goalies.

∙       There is no “off sides” penalty.

∙       Fouls are fouls and are the judgment of the referee. Kicking, tripping, holding, many of these things will occur. Intentional fouls should be direct free kicks. Any player playing out of control (running into players without regard to one’s self or others) will be given a warning and the opposing team given an indirect free kick.

∙       There is no sliding at all. If a player leaves his feet intentionally or if it results in an advantageous play, the other team will be awarded an indirect kick at the spot. If it is considered to be a sliding tackle, the player will be given a warning.  If the player does it again, they will be assessed a two minute penalty.

∙       If a team scores shorthanded, play continues with the penalized player sitting out. If the opposing team scores on the shorthanded team, the short-handed team penalty is over and the player can return to the field.

The crease

∙       The crease is a three foot radius no man’s land in front of each goal. It will be marked in field paint and neither team is to have a player in the space (including the “air space” – so no feet should be projecting into the crease).

∙       If the ball is touched by the defending team inside the crease, or while the defender is occupying the crease the opposing team is awarded a goal.

∙       If the offensive team touches the ball in the crease, the defense will receive a goal kick.  If the ball comes to rest in the crease, the defense is awarded a goal kick.

  • Please remember that the ball is not in the crease or out of bounds unless the entire ball is across the plane of the entire width of the line. It’s not like basketball—the ball can be at rest on the line and still be considered in play and live.

Tournament

DCOM Intramural Soccer Champion will be determined by a single elimination tournament at the end of the season.

SEEDING: Rankings will be earned based on regular season performance. Criteria for seeding will be as follows:

  1. Win/Loss Record
  2. Head to Head
  3. Point Differential (Points Scored – Points Allowed)
  4. Points Allowed
  5. Rabbit out of a hat

FOREFEITS: Count as a win for the receiving team with a 1-0 point value.

OVERTIME: If there is a tie in the tournament, sudden death overtime will occur.

∙       Players on the field at the end of regulation must stay on the field.

∙       There are no substitutions between regulation and overtime or during overtime.

∙       After each minute of overtime, play will stop, and one player will leave the field. This continues until there are three players remaining. Play will continue until someone score.
