Location: LMU soccer practice field at the bottom of DCOM hill.

Time: Season will tentatively start March 28th and run through the end of April or early May.

Team

∙ All DCOM health science students along with their spouses/significant others are invited to participate. LMU undergrads are also welcomed, however 3/5 players on the field at all times need to be DCOM health science students. (This rule is implemented to encourage integration of spouses/significant others and LMU undergrads and discourage segregation. It is hoped that with more integration and less segregation there will be less on the field conflicts and a big happy LMU-DCOM intramural family.)

∙ Each captain is responsible to turn in a signed completed waiver form for each spouse/significant other participating

∙ 5 players on the field at a time.

∙ Substitutions can be made in live play but only at the half line. If the player substitutes at a point other than the half line and gives his or her team the advantage, then the player will be given a two minute penalty and the team will play down a man until the other team scores or the two minutes has elapsed.

∙ Players can only participate for one team for the entire duration of the season. If a player is found to have played on two teams at any point in the season, that player and the second team that player participates with is disqualified.

∙ Qualifying for tournament – a player must participate in at least one regular season game in order to participate in the end of the year tournament.

CAPTAIN

Each team will need one captain or two co-captains.

Captains will be responsible for:

Submitting the roster, spouse waiver forms, team name, and team color.

Contacting other team’s captain(s’) and assigned referees if re-scheduling is needed.

Resolving concerns during games regarding his/her team member(s’) sportsmanship—if members of the other team are not acting appropriately, please inform the current referees and contact the IM coordinator.

Ensuring that a soccer ball will be present—contacting the other team may be necessary if you can’t find one in your team.

5. Refereeing games—one captain will be needed to referee each game in which they will not be playing (asking a member of your team to substitute for you is allowed).

The idea will be as follows: Each team will be playing back to back games; therefore, captains will either show up one hour early to referee the games preceding their own or will stay after their game for one hour to referee the following two games. Get it done as quickly as possible. You can rotate through your team members so you don’t get stuck refereeing each week if you like. Please make sure your substitute understands soccer rules.

Time Management

∙ Games will consist of two 20-minute halves with a 5 minute intermission. Games will start on time, so be there before scheduled time (referees too).

∙ No time outs.

∙ Clock stops for any free kick in the last minute of play.

Gameplay

∙ Field is divided into two halves, scoring can only occur on the goal side of the field (shots made across the half line that do not touch a player are not counted).

∙ Goal kicks are anywhere along the touch line up to the top of the crease. Opposing players must be given 6 yards. If a goal kick crosses mid field without touching another player possession will be awarded to the other team.

∙ There are no throw-ins. The ball is played as an indirect free kick from where it went out unless it goes over the touch line resulting in a goal kick or a corner kick.

∙ In the case of a free kick, the opposing team must give four yards space (not ten) unless it is a goal kick (six yards). Direct kicks will be awarded for viscous fouls and hand balls determined by the referee. All other infractions will be indirect free kicks (minor infractions).

When a free kick is awarded and the spot of the kick is so close to the crease (within 4 yards) that no person may stand between the kicker and not be in the crease, the kicker will have an open shot from the half line to the goal. The kicker may also choose to simply put the ball in play to one of his/her teammates at this time—this pass must travel behind the half line. The kicker is to be chosen by the kicking team. This is to discourage goalies.

∙ There is no “off sides” penalty.

∙ Fouls are fouls and are the judgment of the referee. Kicking, tripping, holding, many of these things will occur. Intentional fouls should be direct free kicks. Any player playing out of control (running into players without regard to one’s self or others) will be given a warning and the opposing team given an indirect free kick.

∙ There is no sliding at all. If a player leaves his feet intentionally or if it results in an advantageous play, the other team will be awarded an indirect kick at the spot. If it is considered to be a sliding tackle, the player will be given a warning. If the player does it again, they will be assessed a two minute penalty.

∙ If a team scores shorthanded, play continues with the penalized player sitting out. If the opposing team scores on the shorthanded team, the short-handed team penalty is over and the player can return to the field.

The crease

∙ The crease is a three foot radius no man’s land in front of each goal. It will be marked in field paint and neither team is to have a player in the space (including the “air space” – so no feet should be projecting into the crease).

∙ If the ball is touched by the defending team inside the crease, or while the defender is occupying the crease the opposing team is awarded a goal.

∙ If the offensive team touches the ball in the crease, the defense will receive a goal kick. If the ball comes to rest in the crease, the defense is awarded a goal kick.

Please remember that the ball is not in the crease or out of bounds unless the entire ball is across the plane of the entire width of the line. It’s not like basketball—the ball can be at rest on the line and still be considered in play and live.

Tournament

DCOM Intramural Soccer Champion will be determined by a single elimination tournament at the end of the season.

SEEDING: Rankings will be earned based on regular season performance. Criteria for seeding will be as follows:

Win/Loss Record

Head to Head

Point Differential (Points Scored – Points Allowed)

Points Allowed

Rabbit out of a hat

FOREFEITS: Count as a win for the receiving team with a 1-0 point value.

OVERTIME: If there is a tie in the tournament, sudden death overtime will occur.

∙ Players on the field at the end of regulation must stay on the field.

∙ There are no substitutions between regulation and overtime or during overtime.

∙ After each minute of overtime, play will stop, and one player will leave the field. This continues until there are three players remaining. Play will continue until someone score.

LMU-DCOM Intramural 3 on 3 Basketball 2011

Location: LMU Mary Mars Gym (next to the swimming pool).

Time: Games will begin Wednesday February 1, 2012 from 8:30-10:30. Games start. Normally, a team will play two games (back to back) but may only play one per day. Hopefully, no team will have to play a fresh team just after playing a game.

Team

Number of Members: 3 on 3 league (3 players on the court per team).

There is no limit to team members allowed on each team.

A minimum of 2 players is necessary to begin and continue play (if someone fouls out).

Rosters are open to all DCOM health science students, spouses and/or significant others.

Teams can be supplemented with LMU undergrads but at least 2/3 players on the court at any given time must be DCOM health science affiliated.

Qualifying for Tournament: A player must play in at least 1 regular season game before they are eligible to play in the tournament.

One Team: Players can only participate for one team for the season. (If a player is found to have played on two teams at any point in the season, the second team and the player are disqualified from that point on)

Team Captain: Each team will need one captain or two co-captains. Captains will be responsible for:

Submitting the roster, spouse waiver forms, and team name.

Resolving concerns during games regarding his/her team member(s’) sportsmanship—if members of the other team are not acting appropriately, please inform the current referees and contact the IM coordinator.

Ensuring that a basketball will be present—contacting the other team may be necessary if you can’t find one in your team.

Refereeing games—two captains will be needed to referee each game in which they will not be playing (asking a member of your team to substitute for you is allowed).

Please make sure your substitute understands basketball rules.

Game Rules (college rules as default unless noted below)

Court Size: Games will be played on a half court. Two games will be played simultaneously—one at each end.

Determining Who Takes Ball First: Rock Paper Scissors Best 2/3.

Game Time: 10 minute halves with a 5 minute half time (around 30 minutes total).

Time will only stop when 2 minutes are left at the end of the half if the score is within 10 points.

Overtime: An overtime period of 2 minutes will be played after a 1 minute pause between the final period and overtime.

Possession will be awarded based on jump ball rules.

Time will stop after 1 minute is left in the overtime.

Second Overtime: This will be a sudden death format—first team to score wins.

Beginning possession in this period will be awarded based on jump ball rules.

This period will not be timed.

Change of Possession: At each change of possession, the new offensive team is required to return the ball (or at least one foot of the person who is controlling the ball) past the three point line at the level of the free throw line or higher.

Definition: When a defender gains controlof the ball due to a steal, rebound (air-balls as well), or gathering of a loose ball (deflection, blocked shot, etc…).

If a defender tips, slaps, or lightly touches the ball, this is not considered control. This means that if a loose ball occurs and the offense regains control before the defense is able, the offense does not need to take the ball past the three point line.

If the defense gains control by steal, rebound (air-ball as well), or gathering of a loose ball beyond the three-point line (from the free throw line and up), the ball is considered “taken back” and the new offense may proceed with the play.

Penalty: If a player fails to take the ball beyond the three point line (free throw line and up) and attempts a shot, or a teammate attempts a shot under the “take back line”, the defense will automatically and immediately be awarded the ball and no basket (if one was scored) will count.

Checking & Beginning Play: Each dead ball play must begin with an offensive player passing the ball to a defender and the defender returning the ball to the offensive player. The offense will then have 5 secondsto pass the ball in.

When the defender returns the ball, this signifies that his/her defense is ready to begin playing. If someone isn’t guarded and the offense takes advantage of that, it’s the defense’s problem/error—no replay.

The offensive player who receives the “check” pass is not allowed to dribble or move (pivoting is legal) until he/she passes the ball or it is tipped by a defender who is not guarding him/her.

The defender involved in checking the ball must be no closer than 3 feet from the offensive player and no further away than 6 feetin any direction.

This defender is not allowed to double team an offensive player while the ball is being “checked”.

Possession will change after each basket—no “make-it-take-it” rule.

Jump Balls: In the case that players of both teams have possession of the ball for 1 to 2 seconds (no fist fights over the ball), play will cease and the ball will be awarded to the team that was on defense first at the beginning of thathalf—possession after a jump ball will alternate between teams for the remainder of the half.

Jump balls will cause a change in possession including at the beginning of the half and if necessary overtime.

Fouling: Regular high school/college fouling rules apply.

5 Fouls per Game: Each player is allowed five fouls per game. Upon committing the fifth foul, the player is not allowed to remain in the game.

Hand is Part of the Ball: Although this is something that is debatable on the playground, it is not considered part of the ball in this league. If a defender hits an offensive player’s hand while shooting or dribbling, it is a foul.

After 7 Team Fouls in a Half: If a defender fouls, and it is the 7thteam foul of the half or higher, the offense is awarded 1 point and the ball at the top of the key.

Offensive Fouls After 7 Fouls in a Half: If an offensive player fouls a defender and it is the 7th foul of the half or higher, the ball will be rewarded to the defense—no point will be given to the defense.

Offensive Charging and Defensive Blocking: Regular high school/college rules apply.

Note: If you are defending and your feet are stationary (planted) and you move your hip, shoulder, elbow, arm, or knee into the offensive player, this is considered a blocking foul.

This is also considered a foul if the defensive player is moving their feet as well. Most common, a defender with poor foot-speed or poor foot-work will begin to lean in the direction the offensive player is trying to travel and contact occurs…this is a foul on the defensive player.

Note: If you put your arms straight in the air and jump straight up, without moving toward the offensive player or moving your arms toward the offensive player, this is notconsidered a blocking foul.

This maneuver must be done before or at the same time the offensive player begins his/her jump.

If the offensive player and the defensive player are touching (less contact as bumping/colliding) as both players jump in the air, as explained above, there will be no foul called.

Note: If the offensive player “has a step” on a defender and the defender begins to cause contact (trying to cut off the offensive player’s route) using their hips, this is a blocking foul. Most of the time, the defender will have their hands in the air as if they are not fouling…it is a foul.

Technical Fouls: A technical foul will be called if foul language (swear word or a crude or lewd remark toward a player’s or referee’s gender, race, or political party J, etc…) is heard by a referee. It may also be called if a player maliciously fouls another player—this does not apply to accidental hard fouls which will be determined by the referee(s).

There will be one point given to the opposite team of the player who earns a technical foul.

If a player is given a technical foul, that player is not allowed to play in the remainder of that game but will be allowed to return in the following game(s).

If a player is given 3 technical fouls in a season (including the tournament), that player will be disqualified from all participation for the remainder of the season and tournament.

Spectators: Inviting family and friends is the best part of intramurals. Please keep your fans under control. Nobody wants to hear your girlfriend/boyfriend dropping f-bombs at the referee/other team. Keep it under control.

Timeouts: Only 2 timeouts per game are allowed. These may both be used in one half or in separate.

Substitution: Substitutions are only allowed during a check-ball situation. No limit to the number of substitutions per game or per dead ball.

Scoring

2 & 3 Point Shot: As seen in high school/college play.

Points Off Fouls

If an offensive player is fouled while shooting and makes the shot, two or three points will be awarded to the offensive team and the defensive team will check the ball to begin play.

If an offensive player is fouled while shooting and doesn’t make the shot, the offensive team will have the choice to:

Take one point and give the ball to the defense,

Or no point will be taken and the offense will remain with the ball.

This is designed to give the offense a replacement for free throws that normally occur. There isn’t enough time to allow free throws.

If the player makes the shot, two or three points will be awarded and the ball will go to the defense—in this case, no extra point will be added to replace a free throw.

After 7 Fouls in a Half: If the defense fouls (shooting or not) after the defense has committed its 7 fouls in that half, the offense is awarded one point and the ball.

Tournament

DCOM Basketball Champion will be determined by a single elimination tournament at the end of the season.

SEEDING: Rankings will be earned based on regular season performance. Criteria for seeding will be as follows:

Win/Loss Record

Head to Head

Point Differential (Points Scored – Points Allowed)

Points Allowed

Rabbit out of a hat

FOREFEITS: Count as a win for the receiving team with a 15-0 point value.
